It is important for any musician to have a good warm-up routine, especially during these colder months. The misconception amongst piano students and even professional pianists is often to warm up by hammering out some fast scales and octaves which can be damaging to one's body. A good warm-up routine should prepare the body and the mind for the upcoming practice session. The aim is to get the blood flowing by beginning with bigger, gross movements and gradually fine-tuning the technique, as well as focusing on good tone production. In this video Rae shows some of her favourite warm-up exercises and the scientific reasoning behind why she created them and asks her students to do them each day.
